Answer:

a^1/2 + a^-1/2     =  (24 +6√2)/7

Step-by-step explanation:

a = 3 + 2^1/2

a^-1/2 = 1/ a^1/2

          = 1 /( 3 + 2^1/2)

           = 1 * ( 3 -  2^1/2 ) / { (3 + 2^1/2) (3 - 2^1/2) }

          = (3 - 2^1/2 ) / 7

a^1/2 + a^-1/2 = 3 + 2^1/2  + [ (3 - 2^1/2 ) / 7]

                     = {7 * (3 + 2^1/2) }/7 +  [ (3 - 2^1/2 ) / 7]

                     =  (21 + 7√2 + 3 - √2)/7

                     =  (24 +6√2)/7

Hint:

(3 + 2^1/2) (3 - 2^1/2) ----->  (a + b) (a-b) = a² - b²

= 3²  - (√2)²  = 9 - 2 =7
