48 similar cells each of emf 1.5 V and internal resistance 2 ohm are used for sending current through a
resistance of 6 ohm. What will be the current if the cells are connected in the following way: (i) 6 rows and 8
cells in a row, (ii) 4 rows and 12 cells in a row.

Answer:

Emf of each cell (e) = 1.5V, internal resistance (r) = 2 ohm, external resistance (R) = 6 ohm.

(i) No. of cells in a row (n) = 8

No. of rows (m) = 6

So, current, I = mne/mR + nr = 6×8×1.5/6×6+8×2

= 72/52

= 1.385 A

(ii) No. of cells in a row (n) = 12

No. of rows (m) = 4

So, current, I = mne/mR+nr = 4×12×1.5/4×6+12×2

= 72/48

= 1.5 A
