Answer:

There are two parts of question

Left Hand Side of equation - L.H.S

4 - it is a number, a digit. (Remember the counting, 1,2,3,4, etc., yes that 4). For understanding keep it as a quantity and things will be simple for you.

x - it is the number which you have to find from equation. As of now it is anonymous. So x. Basically you can use any of the letters from a-z, but generally it is x, this is how mathematicians used to do. And that is how we usually do.

Right Hand Side of equation - R.H.S

This is the part after equals to. This basically means that left hand side is same as right hand side.

16 - it is again a number. It comes after you count 6 more times after 10.

Since, there is no sign between 4 and x, that is why you consider it to be a multiplication. Once, again this is how mathematicians decided to represent and so we also follow.

So, now coming to answer, how many times will you count 4 to get sixteen ?

1,2,3,4 - 4 digits counted - x = 1

5,6,7,8 - again 4 digits counted - x = 2

9,10,11,12 - again - x = 3

13,14,15,16 - again - x = 4

And thus, your x is equal to 4.
