Given :

  • 4x + 6y = 11
  • 2x + 5y = 4

Find :

We have to find the value of x and y by substitution method.

Solution :

→ 4x + 6y = 11 _____ (eq A)

→ 4x = 11 - 6y

→ x = (11 - 6y)/4 _____ (eq 1)

Also,

→ 2x + 5y = 4 _____ (eq 2)

Put value of x in (eq 2)

→ 2(11 - 6y)/4 + 5y = 4

→ (11 - 6y)/2 + 5y = 4

→ (11 - 6y + 10y)/2 = 4

→ (11 + 4y)/2 = 4

→ 11 + 4y = 8

→ 4y = - 3

→ y = -3/4

Put value of y in (eq A)

→ 4x + 6(-3/4) = 11

→ 4x - 9/2 = 11

→ 4x = 11 + 9/2

→ 4x = (22 + 9)/2

→ 4x = 31/2

→ x = 31/8

On solving we get x = 31/8 and y = -3/4.

☆ Verification :

Put value of x and y in (eq 2)

=> 2(31/8) + 5(-3/4) = 4

=> 31/4 - 15/4 = 4

=> 16/4 = 4

=> 4 = 4
