ANSWER :-

given,

5/12

Denominator is 12

Prime factorization of 12 is 2,2,3

If it cpntains 2,5 or both 2&5 then it is terminating decimal.

As our prime factorization contains 3,it is non terminating decimal.

Question : Is 5/12 a terminating decimal or non terminating decimal.

Answer :

We know that, A number is a rational number , when a number can be expressed in the form of p/q form where p and q are co primes and prime factorization of q is of the form 2 raised to m * 5 raised to power n, where n,m are non integers.

Consider denominator of the fraction :

Prime factorization of 12 = 2 * 2 * 3 = 2² * 3

So the given number does not satisfy the above statement. Because q is not of the form 2 power m * 5 power n.

So, 5/12 is a non terminating decimal.
