The total rainfall of six days is 18 cm.

Step-by-step explanation:

Required Formula:

  • Average = [Sum of observations] / [No. of observations]

Let the total rainfall of first 5 days be denoted as "x" cm and the average of the rainfall of 5 days be "y" cm.

So, based on the above formula we have

The average rainfall of 5 days, y = x/5 ..... (i)

The rainfall on the sixth day is recorded to be = 5.5 cm

It is given that after the sixth day reading the average of rainfall of previous 5 days  increases by 5 mm or 0.5 cm.

So, the average rainfall of all 6 days ⇒ \frac{x + 5.5}{6}  = y + 0.5 ...... (ii)

Now, from (i) & (ii), we get

\frac{x + 5.5}{6}  = \frac{x}{5}  + 0.5

\frac{x + 5.5}{6} = \frac{x + 2.5}{5}

⇒ 5x + 27.5 = 6x + 15

⇒ 6x - 5x = 27.5 - 15

x = 12.5 cm

Thus,

The total rainfall of six days will be = 12.5 + 5.5 = 18 cm
