The poem was written when India was under the British Rule and people were struggling to get their freedom from the British Rule.In this poem the poet wants a free India that is  not only free from Britishers but also from the age old caste discrimination practices that are hollowing the roots of the country.He wishes people to be open minded , progressive and use their thinking abilities so that they can taste freedom in true sense.
