The two linear equations in two variables given are :

  • 5x + 2y = - 3 . . . . . (1)
  • x + 5y = 4 . . . . . (2)

Getting the value of x from (1) :

  • 5x + 2y = - 3
  • 5x = - 3 - 2y
  • x = - 3 - 2y/5 . . . . . . (3)

Substituting the value of x from (3) in (2) :

  • x + 5y = 4
  • (- 3 - 2y/5) + 5y = 4
  • - 3/5 - 2y/5 + 5y/1 = 4
  • - 3 - 2y + 25y/5 = 4
  • 23y - 3 = 4 (5)
  • 23y = 20 + 3
  • 23y = 23
  • y = 23/23
  • y = 1

The value of y in the equations is 1.

Substituting y = 1 and finding x from (2) :

  • x + 5y = 4
  • x + 5 (1) = 4
  • x + 5 = 4
  • x = 4 - 5
  • x = - 1

The value of x is - 1 in the equations.
