$\frac{5 - 7x}{2(1 + 2x)} = \frac{ - 8}{7}$

$=> (5 - 7x) \times 7 = - 8 \times 2(1 + 2x)$

$=> 35 - 49x - 16(1 + 2x)$

$=> 35 - 49x = - 16 + 32x$

$=> - 49x + 32x = - 16 - 35$

$=> - 17x = - 51$

$=> x = \frac{51}{47} = 3$

$=> x = 3$
