First convert it into like fractions, so we need to take the LCM which is 8. If we are going to multiply the denominator then we have to multiply the numerator as well so
Step 1 :
1/2= 4/8, we will multiply 2 by 4 to make the denominator 8. 5/8 will be the same as the denominator is already 8
Step 2:
Now we are going to subtract it 5/8-4/8= 1/8
Note: we will only subtract the numerators not denominators
Answer: 1/8

Hope this helps you.

Answer:

=> \frac{1}{8}

Step-by-step explanation:

Given that: -

\frac{5}{8}-\frac{1}{2}

We have to simplify \frac{5}{8}-\frac{1}{2},

By using the concept of DMAS:

D - division

M - multiplication

A - addition

S - subtraction

As we have,

By taking LCM:

=> \frac{5}{8}+\frac{-1\times 4}{2\times 4}

Multiplying the terms, we get

=> \frac{5}{8} +\frac{-4}{8}

Combining the fractions:

=> \frac{5+(-4)}{8}

Adding the terms in the numerator:

=> \frac{1}{8}

Hence, the required solution is \frac{1}{8}.
