A copper sphere of 200 g mass is heated to
raise its temperature to 160 °C and is released
in water of mass 100 g and temperature 10 °C
in a copper calorimeter. If the mass of
calorimeter is 50 g, what will be the maximum
temperature of water?
(Given: specific heat of copper = 0.1 cal/g °C

Answer
i) Heat gained by water = Mass of water x Specific heat capacity of water x Rise in temperature =
= 100 x 4.2 x (280 – 200) = 3360 J.
(ii) Heat gained by calorimeter = Mass of calorimeter x Specific heat capacity of copper x Rise in temperature = 50 x 0.4 x (28 – 20) = 160 J
(iii) Total heat supplied by the metal piece = 3360 + 160 = 3520J
(iv) If the specific heat capacity of metal is c, then Heat supplied by the metal piece
= Mass x Specific heat capacity x Fall in temperature
or 3520 = 250 x c x (1000 – 180)
or c = 3520/250 x 72 = 0.195 J/g0C
