5. A man connects an electric bulb with 120Ω resistance and electric heater with 100Ω resistance in series
they won’t work properly, but when he connect them in parallel they work correctly. Explain this with

Explanation:
Given:
Resistance of bulb = 120Ω
Resistance of heater = 100Ω
let the Resistance of bulb and heater be R1 and R2 respectively
☞ Case 1 (when connected in series)
Total Resistance (RS) = R1 + R2
=> RS = 120Ω + 100Ω
=> RS = 220Ω
☞ Case 2 (When connected in parallel)
=> 1/RP = 1/R1 + 1/R2
=> 1/RP = 1/120 + 1/100
=> 1/RP = (5 + 6) / 600
=> 1/RP = 11/600
=> RP = 600/11 Ω
=> RP = 54.54 Ω
∴ RS > RP
We found that in Case 1, the circuit experience a higher resistance to the current flowing through it. This may reduce the amount of current flowing through it and the appliances may not work properly. A high potential difference is required to run them properly.
But in Case 2, the circuit experience a low resistance as compared to Case 1. Thus the appliances will work properly.
