5. A sedan car of mass 200kg is moving with a certain velocity. It is brought to rest by the
application of brakes, within a distance of 20m when the average resistance being offered to it
is 500N. What was the velocity of the motor car?

INITIAL VELOCITY OF CAR IS 10 m/s.

Given:

  • Mass = 200 kg
  • Force = 500 N
  • Distance required = 20 m

To find:

  • Initial velocity of car ?

Calculation:

First of all, let us calculate the acceleration provided by the brakes :

a =  \dfrac{f}{m}

 \implies a =  \dfrac{ - 500}{200}

 \implies a =  - 2.5 \: m {s}^{ - 2}

Now, applying EQUATIONS OF KINEMATICS:

 {v}^{2}  =  {u}^{2}  + 2as

  • Initial velocity be u :

  \implies {0}^{2}  =  {u}^{2}  + 2( - 2.5)(20)

  \implies  {u}^{2}   =  2( 2.5)(20)

  \implies  {u}^{2}   = 100

 \implies \: u = 10 \: m {s}^{ - 1}

So, initial velocity of car is 10 m/s.
