5. A teacher formed a Cartesian plane on the floor of her class room and asked the students to move the following positions after answering the coordinates.

(a) Point where abscissa is -3 and ordinate 4. (b) Point in the second quadrant whose distance from both the axes is 5 units.

(c) Point on the x-axis whose distance from y-axis is 5 units.

(d) Point with abscissa 1 and ordinate double of it. Mani, Sonia, Rajeev and Vishal answered the questions quickly one by one and moved to the

respective positions. The teacher then asked them whether they form a line or not?

Answer:

Yes, all four students form a straight line.

Step-by-step explanation:

co-ordinates of a,b,c,d are

(-3,4),(-5,5),(5,0) and (1,2)

The slopes of the segments ab,bc and cd respectively are

(5-4)/(-5+3) = -1/2

(0.-5)/(5+5) -5/10=-1/2 and

(2-0)/(1-5)=2/-4 =-1/2

Since all three line segments have the same slope and are connected, hence they form a straight line.
