5. A tent is in the form of a right circular cylinder, surmounted by a cone. The diameter
of the cylinder is 30 m. The height of the cylindrical portion is 9 m, while the vertex of
the cone is 17 m. above the ground. Find the cost of canvass which require to making the
tent, if the rate of canvass is Rs.10 per m2. .

Answer:

Area of canvas required for the tent = Curved surface area of the cylindrical portion + Curved surface area of the cone

=(π)rl+2(π)rh

For cylinder:

Radius (r) of the cylinder =12 m

Height(h) of the cylinder =11m

Curved surface area of cylinder =2πrh=2(π)×12×11=264(π)

For cone:

Height (h) of the cone = Height of the vertex from ground − Height of the cylinder

=16−11=5 m

Radius (r) of the cone =12m

Slant height of the cone =lm

Curved Surface area of cone =πrl=π(12)(13)=(156π)m

Hence, area of canvas =(264π+156π)m
