5. (a) The mean of 16 variates is 8. If each variate is increased by 2 then find the mean of the new
variates.
(b) The mean of 5 numbers is 18. If a number is omitted then the mean of the remaining 4 number
becomes 16. Find the omitted number.

the answer of (a) is 10 & of (b) is 26

Step-by-step explanation:

In first case i.e for (a)

first up all, there are 16 varieties

if consider those 16 varieties as,

a+b+c+d.......+ p (16 varieties)

and divided it by 16 (by the mean formula)

so we will get 8 (given)

if we considered the sum of all varieties as 'x'

then, x/16 = 8 (mean formula)

then we get x = 128

now by given condition,

all varieties are increase by 2,

then we've to add 2 in all varieties,

i.e a+2 + b+2 + c+2 ....... p+2

and we already find the sum of all verities

I e 'x' = 128

then now we have to do just add 32 in 128 ( 2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2=32)

we get,

128+32= 160 & divided it by 16 (by mean formula)

so we will get,

160/16 = 10

so the answer of (a) is 10

In second case i.e (b)

the mean of 5 numbers is 18

by the mean formula,

if we considered those 5 verities as,

a+b+c+d+e = 'y'

and divided it by 5 we get 18 (given)

and the value of 'y' is 90 (y/5 = 18 then y= 5×18)

Now one of the number is omitted then,

we have to considered,

a+b+c+d = 'z' (given)

now by mean formula,

z/4=16 then the value of z = 64 (16×4=64)

Now the value of omitted number is,

in first condition we find the sum of 5 verities is 90 & after one no. is omitted we get the sum of 4 varieties is 64.

Then the difference between them is the omitted number,

i.e 90 - 64 = 26

So the value of omitted number is 26.

Hope it will help you...

It was quite big but I think it helps you to understand .
