The Indus Valley Civilization was ahead of its times with respect to the ideas incorporated regarding architecture, sanitation and civic planning. High regards for health and sanitation can be grasped through the following aspects discovered in excavation:

1. The sites exhibit excellent knowledge of slopes, which has been ingrained in designing the drains as well as the the streets. Each house had its own drain which connected to the main drain in sloping fashion, to take away the effluents.

2. Not only do the houses have drains, each one has a separate well as source of water, for the toilet and bath region. This emphasizes the value of hygeine in daily lives.

3. The drains have covering and most structures are built of burnt brick. This avoided overflow/clogging/deterioration when it rained. Further, this may have also prevented spread of water-borne diseases.

4. The Mohenjo Daro site has "The Great Bath" which shows well-defined steps in its contours. The region is claimed to have been used as common bathing area. This structure has outlets to drain out the used water and keep the water clean after repeated usage.

Thus, the above examples highlight the high standards of sanitation and health among the people of Indus Valley Civilization.
