Nalanda was a miracle because of buddhism which was the biggest religion at that time and also because of the emergence of gupta empire which was the second big expansive empire to emerge in india after mauryan empire.

the unification under one empire normally leads to greatness and glory, so was the case with nalanda.

the palas also patronised nalanda but their hindu buddhist mixture of buddhism which came to be known as vijrayana buddhism caused decline of nalanda as it was a very new religion which buddhists were not used to.

nalanda not only had donation form inside india and imperial patronage but it had donations from all across the buddhist world which was in itself very far and wide. it came from china to south east asia to central asia etc.
