Yes the velocity of an object can be in opposite direction or it can be in the same direction to the direction of acceleration . if we say that the direction of velocity and the direction of acceleration are same then it means that velocity is increasing either in +ve or-ve direction .

If the velocity and acceleration are in the same direction (both have the same sign - both positive or both negative) the object is speeding up. If the velocity and acceleration are in opposite directions (they have opposite signs), the object is slowing down.
