Answer: When Mr Oliver told the watchman what he saw at the forest the watchman held the lantern Infront of his face and asked whether . As the light fell on his face Mr Oliver realised that the watchman was having a featureless face as well.

The story a face in the dark has Supernatural elements . ... Oliver being a bachelor and lonely imagined something Supernatural like a boy without a face or a kind of a ghost . A boys school cap might have been lying on a rock which he in the flickering light office torch imagines to be a boy without a face.
