The traces of cotton were first discovered at Harappa.
- Eastern Pakistan's Punjab province has the settlement of Harappa. It is located on the left side of a section of Ravi River that is now dry, some 100 miles (160 kilometres) southwestern Lahore in Sahiwal.
- The town is situated atop a vast network of mounds where, since 1921, excavations have uncovered the ruins of an enormous Indus civilisation metropolis, second to only Mohenjo-Daro, which is located approximately 400 miles (644 kilometres) towards the southwest.
- The first excavations at the location were started and overseen by Sir John Hubert Marshall in 1921. His discoveries stretched the date of Indian prehistory back to around 2500 BCE.
