If an object changes its position with respect to its surroundings with time, then it is called in motion. It is a change in the position of an object over time. Motion in a straight line is nothing but linear motion.

Explanation:

Motion change with time of the position or orientation of a body. Motion that changes the orientation of a body is called rotation. In both cases all points in the body have same velocity ( directed speed ) and the same acceleration ( time rate of change of velocity)

and now the motion along a straight line is called linear motion or we also called this motion as rectilinear motion.
