which may include dome-

stic and industrial discharge

as well as storm water, groundwater infiltration

and inflow ]

or domestic liquid waste which originates from

sanitary conveniences,

e.g. water closets, urinals, baths, sinks, etc of dwellings, commercial facilities and institutions in a community, sometimes referred to as Sanitary Sewage whereas

Refuse refers to both

recyclable and non-

recyclable materials.

It applies to materials

that are leftovers after

use and of no relevance

to the user.

Sewage :-

  • Wastewater produced from domestic, industrial and commercial sources is referred as Sewage.
  • It's mainly carried out by sewers.
  • It's composition varies from place to place depending on consumption of water.
  • Amount of BOD ( Biochemical Oxygen Demand) is high in sewage .
  • It has to be treated in treatment plants before discharging to water bodies.

Refuse :-

  • It is generally municipal solid waste.
  • It is non hazardous in nature and requires transport to disposal site.
  • It's composed of rubbish and garbage like glass, paper, cloth etc.
  • There's no BOD found in refuse.
  • It mainly applies to materials that are leftovers after use which can be recyclable or non-recyclable.
