These signify growing pressures to the environment to obtain raw material and resources to supply the industry and satisfy the demand in products and services by the world population. Together with that it is remarkable the success in the generation of new technologies making possible more energetic efficiency, the wide use of renewable energy, safer and renewable use of water, new recycling technologies, and environmentally friendly designs, products, and services. But ignorance about these achievements and apathy to turn it into practical actions affect sustainability.
Sustainability is a concept that is necessary to understand in all its complexity and dimensions. The problems of sustainable development begin with global climate and environmental problems and extend to cultural and socioeconomic aspects such as poverty, social inequalities, among others, all of them connecting and interacting and conforming a real structural pandemic ill of modern societies. To face and creatively promote palliative and solving approaches we need to educate not only a highly qualified and capable engineer but a person with plenty of creativity, responsibility, ethics, and the character of a truly transformational leader (Myers & Beringer, 2010). In this contest, the formation of identity, sense of belonging, character, and culture are irreplaceable complements to the adequate cross-disciplinary academic curriculum. The crucial question is what are the engineers now and how should they be in their natural and social environments? It is a key matter to a truly comprehensive education. There are many factors affecting learning sustainability and the integral education on engineers in universities and HEIs. One of them is the effective pedagogic practice in the classroom; another is the low attention to the conformation of a culture in students and, finally, the low incidence in the character curriculum. Learning sustainability in the education of new engineers represents a change in the cultural conception of students. That is, not an extension of a profession, not a curriculum of subjects with plenty of scientific data and technological information; this requires a new academic and professional culture, a new philosophy
