a) Non-green plants do not have chloroplast and thus they do not have chlorophyll which is a pigment essential for photosynthesis to take place. Since plants get food through the process of photosynthesis, they cannot make food in absence of chlorophyll and that is why non-green plants cannot make their own food.

b)The leaves of 'cactus' are reduced to 'spines' to prevent the loss of water by transpiration

Leaves lose water by the process of transpiration but cactus grows in deserts and cannot afford to lose water.

The spines of the cactus store water. They reduce air flow around cactus and help the plant to get enough water by storing it. The stems and not the leaves of the cactus contain chlorophyll to prepare food.

Answer:

a)Non green plants cannot make their own food because they do not have chlorophyll in their leaves which breaks down carbon dioxide and water molecules thus do not produce glucose(food).

b)The leaves of 'cactus' are reduced to 'spines' to prevent the loss of water by transpiration. Leaves lose water by the process of transpiration but cactus grows in deserts and cannot afford to lose water. The spines of the cactus store water.
