Answer :-
Ashoka used to be a great ruler before. He fought many wars and conquered many places. But the Kalinga war changed his life forever. It was a war fought by the Mauryan Empire to conquer Kalinga. It was important to conquer Kalinga as it controlled the trade routes with Southeast Asia. Therefore, he went to capture it with his army in 262 BC.
The war caused great suffering to all the people who participated in it. Though Ashoka managed to capture Kalinga, thousands of people died and lakhs were injured. Uncountable dead bodies were scattered all over the battle ground.
Seeing all this bloodshed and suffering of his people, Ashoka became a follower of Gautam Buddha and followed his teachings, including the path of non-violence. He also decided not to fight any more wars.
