They used the forests for hunting, gathering tubers, fruits, flowers and herbs and for grazing their cattle. In some places, they cut down and burnt the trees and cleared the land to cultivate crops.

During British Rule, Forests were classified into three categories, Reserved forests, Protected forests, Village forests.
They restricted the shifting cultivators to enter to the forests.
In Reserved forests, no one had been allowed to enter to that forests.
In Protected forests, villagers were allowed to enter but it was also protected.
In Village forests, villagers can easily use the resources of that forests.
