If we mix salt or sugar with water it completely dissapears because it gets into the space between water molecules . So this way we can prove the gaps are present between water molecules....

Hence it proves that solute molecules have entered gaps present between water molecules. If there would have been no gaps either solute would not dissolve in water or it would shift water molecules away thereby increasing volume of liquid.
