We know that :

Distance : Actual Path covered by the particle.

Displacement : Shortest distance between its initial and final point.

So if a particle travels half a circle,

its distance will be equal to half the circumference of the circle

Distance, D = 2πr / 2

D = πr

D = π R units

But displacement would be straight line joining the initial and the final points which is the diameter of the circle.

Displacement, D' = 2R units
