Forts established by the British in India :-

1) Thalassery Fort near Kannur -

This fort was built by the British East India Company in 1683 AD. Thalassery Fort is a symbol of British Colonial Era in Kerala. It was built to protect English trade activities and property from attacks by the local chieftain.

2) Anchuthengu Fort in Verkala -
This fort was built by the British in 1696 AD after obtaining permission from the then-reigning queen of Attingal. It has a very notable history, being the first permanent post for Company on the Malabar Coast. 

3) Mahim Fort in Mumbai -
Mahim Fort was built by the British in 1669 AD in Mumbai by Gerald Aungier, a Governor of Bombay who was instrumental in bringing in traders, builders and business persons from all over India to the city. 

4) Sewri Fort in Mumbai -
Sewri Fort was built in 1680 AD, at a time when Mumbai was still a collection of several islands that was constantly under attack by Mughals and other forces. This fort was built on what was then the island of Parel, on a hill that once overlooked the sea as well as the mainland.

5) Fort St. George in Chennai -
Known as the White Town historically, Fort St. George in Chennai was the first fortress built by the British in India. It was built in 1644 on land called Chennirayarpattinam, purchased from a Vijaynagar Chieftain. Facing the sea on one side and fishing villages everywhere else, the Fort became a hub of trade activities and crucial in spreading English influence in the region.
