5. In a dam, water falls at a rate of 1000 kg s-
from a height of 100 m.
(a) Calculate the initial potential energy of the
water.
(b) Assuming that 60% of the energy of the
falling water is converted to electrical
energy, calculate the power generated.
(Take g = 9.8 m s-2).

Answer:

h=100m

mass of water=1000g

g=9.8m/s²

P. E. =mgh

=9.8*1000*100

=980000 Joules

Water used to convert into electrical energy=60/100*980000

=60*9800

=588000joules

P=W/T

=588000/1

=558000 Watt
