The Area of the shaded region = 26 cm^2

Step-by-step explanation:

DG = 7 cm

GC = 2 cm

∴ CD = GC + DG = (7 + 2) cm = 9 cm . . . . . . . . .  (i)

DE = FG = 4 cm

AE = 2 cm

∴ AD = DE + AE = (4 + 2) cm = 6 cm . . . . . . . . . . (ii)

∴ ABCD is NOT a square, rather it is a rectangle.

Now the Area of the shaded region:

= Area of rectangle ABCD - Area of rectangle DEFG

= AD x CD - DE x DG

= [(6 x 9) - (4 x 7)] cm^2  [using given data, equation (i) and (ii)]

= (54 - 28) cm^2

= 26 cm^2
