In some xerophytes the stems perform the functions of leaf.In the genus Euphorbia,leaves are caducous i.e they fall immediately after their formation or if they persist on the plant they are reduced.These features help these xerophytes to cut down the transpiration rate.These stems are called as phylloclades.
