Pattachitra is a famous traditional art of Odisha. The theme of these paintings mainly is Hindu mythology revolving around Lord Jagannath. A fine brush made from the hair of mongoose or rat is commonly used to paint them.

Origin and history:

  • The ancient cloth-based scroll painting technique known as patachitra or pattachitra is mostly practised in the eastern Indian states of Odisha, West Bengal, and some regions of Bangladesh.
  • The Patachitra art style is renowned for its fine details and the mythical and folktale stories that are engraved in them.
  • Pattachitra is a piece of ancient Odia art that was initially made for ritual purposes and as gifts for visitors to Puri and other Odia temples.
  • Patachitras are a part of an old Bengali tale art style that were initially used as a visual aid during singing.
  • From the perspective of the medium, the paintings of Odisha may be classified into three groups: paintings on fabric, or "Patta Chitra," paintings on walls, or "Bhitti Chitra," and palm leaf engravings, or "Tala Patra Chitra," or "Pothi, Chitra."
