शास्त्री जी और भारतीय आजादी का आन्दोलन :

शास्त्री जी अपनी अल्पायु (17 वर्ष की उम्र) से ही भारतीय आजादी के आन्दोलनों से जुड़े रहे। सन् 1930 से सन् 1942 तक के आजादी के आन्दोलनों के बारह वर्षों के दौरान, शास्त्री जी ने सात वर्ष जेल में बिताए। सबसे लम्बी जेल यात्रा 1942 ई. की थी जो तीन वर्ष तक चली।

साहस और अनुशासन :

शास्त्री जी में अदम्य साहस और अनुशासन की भावना परिपक्वता को प्राप्त थी। वे समस्याओं के निराकरण में पूर्ण सक्षम थे। वे इन्दिरा गाँधी के राजनैतिक गुरु थे। शास्त्री जी ने उत्तर प्रदेश और केन्द्र में विभिन्न पदों पर कार्य किया। उन्हें जिन विभागों का उत्तरदायित्व दिया गया, उन्होंने उन सभी विभागों के कार्य को पूर्ण दक्षता से निभाया।

जनता के सेवक :

शास्त्री जी अपनी छवि ‘जनता के सेवक’ के कारण लोकप्रिय हुए। यद्यपि प्रधानमन्त्री जैसे भारी भरकम पद का कार्य उन्होंने मात्र 19 महीने ही किया लेकिन इस पद पर रहकर सफलताएँ और लोकप्रियता अपने आप में एक उदाहरण हैं। वे प्रायः प्रत्येक भारतीयजन से यही अपेक्षा करते थे कि वे यह समझें कि वे सबसे पहले देश के नागरिक हैं। देश के नागरिक हैं तो संविधान आपको अधिकार तो देता ही है, लेकिन उसके साथ तुम सभी से अपने कर्तव्यों के निर्वाह की आशा भी करता है। आप सभी स्वतन्त्र हैं परन्तु स्वतन्त्रता का उपयोग एक व्यवस्थित समाज के हित में स्वेच्छा से लगाए गए प्रतिबन्धों के अनुसार होना चाहिए। शास्त्री जी कहा करते थे कि अधिकार, कर्त्तव्य और आत्मसंयम अति महत्त्वपूर्ण बात हैं। हमें इनको व्यवहार में लाना चाहिए।
