Answer:

• Henceforth known as British India, it was thereafter directly ruled as a colonial possession of the United Kingdom, and India was officially known after 1876 as the Indian Empire.

•The British also created "divide and rule" policies, pitting Hindu and Muslim Indians against one another. In 1905, the colonial government divided Bengal into Hindu and Muslim sections; this division was revoked after strong protests

•The British entered India as traders and their primary objective was to earn profits by carrying on trade in Indua

Answer: The British had come to India just for trading but after some time they ended up conquering it as it was a country rich in resources. They ruled over India for more than 200 years. They made many repressive policies like: Salt tax, Doctrine of lapse, etc. But, they also brought about positive changes like banning the wrong practice of Sati, encouraging widow remarriage, etc. The last governor general of India was Lord Mountbatten. India got independence from British on August 15, 1947.
