Surely the situation was far worse back in 1930s-40s. Back then people were so much into casteism that they thought of it as the norm. The idea of equality was almost non-existent back then.
One reason for this can be the attitude prevalent in the Indian civilization whereby the kings were superiors and the people who did household work belonged to the lower cast.
There was an expectation from the lower cast individuals to perform tasks like cleaning toilets, cleaning houses, watering plants and other such menial tasks. The prevalence of this mentality was present even after the independence of India.
At this time, the Indian society was badly in need of a social reformer and B.R. Ambedkar readily fulfilled that role. He fought this evil of casteism with great fervor and enthusiasm.
