Casteism in India

We are familiar, all too well, with the problem of casteism in India. Even in the 21st century, people in India unfortunately still indulge in differentiating others on the basis of caste, color, and gender.

Surely the situation was far worse back in 1930s-40s. Back then people were so much into casteism that they thought of it as the norm. The idea of equality was almost non-existent back then.

One reason for this can be the attitude prevalent in the Indian civilization whereby the kings were superiors and the people who did household work belonged to the lower cast.

There was an expectation from the lower cast individuals to perform tasks like cleaning toilets, cleaning houses, watering plants and other such menial tasks. The prevalence of this mentality was present even after the independence of India.

At this time, the Indian society was badly in need of a social reformer and B.R. Ambedkar readily fulfilled that role. He fought this evil of casteism with great fervor and enthusiasm. Furthermore, his role in spreading awareness regarding the injustice and discrimination towards lower caste people was very significant.

Opposition to Untouchability

One can say that untouchability is an enhanced form of casteism in India. Now largely absent, it was a terrible scenario faced by the lower caste people previously.

Furthermore, the idea behind this ridiculous practice was that certain lower caste people were considered impure and so the higher caste people avoided physically touching them. Ask any rational logical person would say that this is blatant defamation and humiliation of an individual. Naturally, Ambedkar was vehemently against this evil practice.

During his days of practicing law in the Bombay High Court, Ambedkar promoted education among the untouchables. The aim of this practice was to uplift the so-called untouchable’s community.

Furthermore, Ambedkar launched active movements against untouchability. Moreover, he laid emphasis on opening up public drinking water resources. Also, Ambedkar strongly supported the right of lower castes to enter temples.

Drafting the Constitution

The honor of being the chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee went to B.R. Ambedkar. He certainly is the mastermind behind the constitution of India.

Furthermore, Ambedkar’s brilliance makes the Indian constitution one of the best in the world. Moreover, Ambedkar prepared a text that provided constitutional protections and guarantees for a range of civil liberties.

B.R. Ambedkar was one of the most influential figures in Indian history. No wonder the celebration of his birthday takes place with such pride in the form of Ambedkar Jayanti. The name of this great Indian patriot will always remain alive in the pages of history and the heart of every Indian.
