the population of the town before earthquake = 100%. now after earthquake 5% of people died. therefore remaining population = 95%. now 8% of remaining population left the town. therefore the population remaining now is 87.4%. now 87.4%=43700. therefore 1%of population = 500. therefore total population before earthquake = 50000. hope this helps.
