Let x be the initial population.
Number of people killed in earthquake =  \frac{5}{100} x
                Remaining number of people =  \frac{95}{100}x
                   Number of people left town =  \frac{8}{100} \frac{95}{100}  x
                                  Present population = 43700

x- [ \frac{95}{100} \frac{8}{100}x+ \frac{5}{100}x] = 43700
                       \frac{10000x-760x-500}{10000} = 43700
                                                         10000x - 1260x = 437000000
                                                                         8740x = 437000000
                                                                                  x = 50000
