Given:

  • One seller quoted the price of 5 pens and 7 pencils as Rs. 55 1/3 and Rs. 14 2/3 respectively.
  • Second seller quoted the price of 7 pens and 5 pencils as Rs. 78 2/5 and Rs. 10 3/4 respectively.

To find:

  • From where should we buy ?

Solution:

Price quoted by first seller:

  • Price of 5 pens = 55 1/3
  • Price of 5 pens = 166/3
  • Price of 5 pens = Rs. 55.33

Therefore, price of 1 pen = 55.33/5 = Rs. 11.07

  • Price of 7 pencils = 14 2/3
  • Price of 7 pencils = 44/3
  • Price of 7 pencils = Rs. 14.67

Therefore, price of 1 pencil = 14.67/7 = Rs. 2.09

Price quoted by second seller:

  • Price of 7 pens = 78 2/5
  • Price of 7 pens = 392/5
  • Price of 7 pens = Rs. 78.5

Therefore, price of 1 pen = 78.5/7 = 11.2

  • Price of 5 pencils = 10 3/4
  • Price of 5 pencils = 43/3
  • Price of 5 pencils = Rs. 10.75

Therefore, price of 1 pencil = 10.75/5 = Rs. 2.15

Now, we see from the above calculations it is clear that the price quoted by first seller is less than the price quoted by second seller, so we must buy from first seller as both pens and pencils are cheap from first one as compared to second one.
