Answer:

let cost of 1 pen be X and cost of 1 pencil be Y

5x+6y=9___(1)×2

3x+2y=5___(2)×6

solve by elimination

10x+12y=18

18x+12y=30

(-). (-). (-)

-8x=-12

x=12/8 = 6/4

substitute x=6/4 in eq . 1

and find y

Answer:

x=3/2

y=1/4

Step-by-step explanation:

let cost of pen=x

cost of pencil=y

5x+6y=9               3x+2y=5

5x=9-6y

x=(9-6y)/5

3x+2y=5

3((9-6y)/5)+2y=5

(27-18y)/5+2y =5

(27-18y+10y)/5=5

27-18y+10y=5×5

27-8y=25

-8y=25-27

-8y=-2

8y=2

y=2/8

y=1/4

x=(9-6(1/4))/5

=(9-3/2)/5

=(18-3)/10

=15/10

x=3/2
