Find the percentage of people left in the town:

Percentage of people left after 5% died = 100 - 5 = 95%

Percentage of people who left the town = 3% x 95% = 0.03 x 95% = 2.85%

Percentage of people left = 100 - 5 - 2.95 = 92.15%

Find the original number of people in town:

Percentage of people in town = 92.15%

Number of people in town = 276,450

92.15% = 276,450

1% =  276,450 ÷ 92.15 = 3000

100% = 3000 x 100 = 300,000

Answer: There were 300,000 people originally in the town.
