(a) Sonal observed a change in the size of a candle when burnt. Help her to understand the type of
change/s observed in a burning candle. Justify your answer with a suitable reason.

When a candle is burnt both physical and chemical changes occur.

The physical change in the candle can be observed when the candle melts, and its size decreases.

The chemical change can be observed when the new product, i.e, wax forms.

The melting of a candle is reversible as the melted wax can be cooled down to come back to its solid form, but yet even if it is a reversible change it is considered to also be a chemical change.
