Kathakali is a form of dance with roots back to ancient India. It is a storytelling form of dance made up of actors who use mudras, or hand gestures, to communicate their lines.

'Pacha' make-up features bright, coral/red lips to depict gods, nobles, and sages

'Katti' makeup is a mixture of green and red with an upturned mustache to represent evil

'Kari' makeup uses black makeup to depict forest dwellers or hunters, or even demonesses when used with streaks of red

'Taadi' uses red, white, or black beards to depict godly or demonic characters

'Minukku' uses orange, yellow, or saffron to depict virtuous female characters.

The origins of Kathakali dance date back to the late 16th and early 17th century in India. At that time, it was given its present name and took on its modern-day characteristics. However, its roots go back much further into ancient folk arts and classical dances in Kerala. These ancient folk dances were performed at religious festivals by actors wearing colorful headdresses, costumes, and elaborate, even ornate, headpieces.

Characteristics of Kathakali Dance

Kathakali shares similarities with all other forms of dance in India. To tell a story, it blends music, choreography, hand gestures, and vocal narratives to tell stories. The stories are told by three groups of performers: the actors (who do not speak), the percussionists, and the vocalists. Traditionally, the actors were all males, but that has evolved so that both men and women can perform the Kathakali dance.

Choreography

The actors themselves cannot rely on their voices to tell the story. Instead, they create their characters through the intricate choreography. Additionally, the actors use mudras, or hand gestures that convey the dialogue of their individual character. During Kathakali, the mudras function as a sort of sign language. Since they do not speak, actors use facial expressions to show the internal state of their character. This is known as bhava.

dancers are further defined by the specific makeup and costumes they wear. The color of the main makeup is of particular importance; they symbolize different types of characters in Kathakali dance.
