(i) The sum of two numbers is 97. If the greater number is divided
by the smaller, the quotient is 7 and the remainder is 1. Find
the numbers.

∴ the greater no. is 97-x

according to given condition,

greater no. = smaller no. × quotient + remainder

97-x = x * 7 + 1

97-1 = 7x + x

96 = 8x

∴ x = 96/8

∴ x = 12

smaller no. = x = 12

greater no. = 97-x = 97-12 = 85
