Answer :-

  • Tina had 4 books and Stella had 20 books.

To find :-

  • The number of books each girl had.

Solution :-

  • It is given that Stella has five times as many books as Tina. If Stella gave 16 books to Tina, they would have the same number of books. We have to find the number of books they both had.

Let :-

  • The number of books Tina has be "x".

Then :-

  • The number of books Stella has will be "5x", as she has five times as many books as Tina.

If Stella gave 16 books to Tina,

  • The number of books left with her will be "5x - 16".

It is given that :-

  • If Stella gave 16 books to Tina, they would have the same number of books.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Therefore,

  \longmapsto\rm5x - 16 = x

  \longmapsto\rm5x = x + 16

 \longmapsto \rm5x - x = 16

  \longmapsto\rm4x = 16

 \longmapsto \rm x =  \dfrac{16}{4}

  \longmapsto \underline{ \boxed{\rm x = 4}}

-----------------------------------------------------------

Hence, the number of books Tina and Stella had are as follows :-

 \sf Tina's  \: books  = x = 4.

 \sf Stella's  \: books  = 5x = 5 \times 4 = 20.
