There are 5 steps involved in the process of nutrition in animals . They are as follows :

Ingestion :- It is the process of intake of food in the body by animals .
Digestion -: In this process , the larger food particles are broken down into smaller , water soluble particles .
Absorption -: The digested food is absorbed in the bloodstream through the intestinal wall in this process .
Assimilation -: The absorbed food is used for energy , repair and growth of cells in the body .
Egestion -: The undigested food is removed out of the body in faeces . This process is known as egestion .
