Given : The following table gives the frequency distribution of marks obtained by 199 students in an  examination

To Find : Calculate median marks and the percentage of failures if minimum marks for a pass is 35.

Solution:

Marks     No. of Students :    CF

10- 20                21                   21

21- 30                19                    40

31- 40                60                  100

41 - 50              42                   142

51 - 60              24                   166

61 - 70               18                   184

71 - 80              15                    199

199/2  = 99.5

Median =  39.9   ≈ 40

Failure  =  21  + 40  + (60/2)

= 21 + 40  +  30

= 91

Failure % =   45%
