When seen under high magnification, paper reveals its surface which is truly uneven. Ink, when wet, is able to enter the voids thus allowing it to stick to the paper.

The force due to which ink sticks to a piece of paper is called adhesive force.

  • The force of attraction between the molecules of two different substances is known as adhesive force.
  • Ink, for example, adheres to paper when writing due to the adhesive force. Fevicol, gum, and other similar substances have a high adhesive property.
  • The cohesive force between water molecules is less than the adhesive force between water and glass molecules, hence water wets glass.
