The boy wanted to fend off the bandits fearlessly. He wanted to do such a thrilling and heroic deed to gain the admiration of his brother and the villagers.

He did this because he wanted to be recognised as a strong and brave person. Futhermore, this was a way for him to show his love towards his mother and his courage.
